It means that they know exactly what motivates them and stay motivated until they succeed. If you don’t have enough motivation, you would surely have difficulty in studying, doing your assignments or having anything done.

Staying motivated is never easy. You might lose your focus or find yourself become less and less motivated when you encounter difficulties or find something else which seems to be more interesting. If you often find it hard to stay motivated, take a look at the article below for the most effective tips on such areas.

Here are our pieces of advice to help you stay motivated.

1.      Know what motivates you

First of all, you need to know clearly what motivates you. Basically, all kinds of motivations fall into two categories.

The first kind of motivation is intrinsic motivators. These motivators refer to the feeling inside you that drives you into studying or working. You might feel passionate about learning a particular subject. When you study well or pass the exam, you would be able to feel accomplished or happy.

The second kind of motivation is extrinsic motivators. These motivators are the results that you can get if you stay motivated and try your best to achieve what you are aiming for. For example, think about studying hard. In the end, you would be able to receive good results. Good grades will also increase your chance of getting a good grade after you graduate. A motivation could also be about a gift you are going to have if you pass an exam, for example.

After you identify all of the things that motivate you, create a list of the motivators – the things that would make you more focused on what you are going to do.

When you write down all of these motivators, stick the list onto the wall in your working or study station. Every time when you feel de-motivated, you can take a look at the note. This will help you to stay on track and feel more determined to continue with what you are doing now.

2.      Create a realistic goal and schedule

Having an achievable goal can help you stay motivated. Imagine that if a task is too hard for you to accomplish, you would feel tired and exhausted over time. A good and manageable schedule would help you to control your energy within a certain amount of time so that you don’t spend too much time on doing unnecessary tasks.

There are a few things that you should know in order to make a realistic goal:

  • Plan your schedule daily, weekly and monthly.
  • Make sure that the goals that you set can be achieved within a certain amount of time.
  • Have a plan A and a plan B. A plan B is a slightly modified version of plan A. A plan A might contain three smaller specific tasks that you need to complete. On the other hand, a plan B contains 2 tasks only. This would help you to have a feel of fulfilling something, especially in case plan A is a plan that overtakes your ability. You will feel motivated even when you just finish the backup
  • Divide the big task into smaller tasks for effective management. You might have a big goal of getting into your favourite school. In order to achieve that, you need to pass exams with good results. In this case, your smaller goal would be getting good results in the next exam.
  • Finally, you should make weekly checkpoints to track your progress.

Tip: When you have quite a lot of goals, you need to organize and prioritise them according to their importance as well as their urgency. For example, you might need to focus more on the exam you are going to have next week instead of the exam you are going to have at the end of the term. Don’t try to achieve all of your goals all at one. You might not have enough time and energy for all of these goals at the same time.

No matter what you plan to do, always think about positive results. Thinking positive about yourself will also help you to stay motivated to try your best to achieve all of the goals that you have set.

3.      Connect and seek help from your friends

Don’t just focus entirely on your work or study. Connecting with other people would help you to stay motivated effectively. If you come to talk to people about what they are doing and they have achieved, I am sure that you would be able to be more inspired and motivated. Stay away from people who you think might have a bad influence on you.

In addition, you can consider joining a small study group. At that group, you would be able to stay focused when your progress is constantly compared with other people in the group. They also support to push you harder to accomplish your goal.

4.      Take a break

When you plan your time of study sessions, remember to throw in some regular breaks. You can have a cup of coffee, play your favourite games, listen to music or just simply close your eyes and relax.

Taking a break would help you to relax and feel less stressed. When you are refreshed after the break, you would be able to come back to studying with more energy. It would be more efficient. And when you feel like you are getting results from studying hard, you would obviously feel more motivated.

You also need to take care of yourself wel l- like follow a healthy diet, exercise regularly and avoid having too much caffeine. Remember that no matter how busy you are, you should always spend enough time for sleeping every day. When you take care of yourself, not only do you have enough energy for doing what you want to achieve. You are also mentally healthy, proud and relaxed, which all contribute to helping you stay motivated.

5.      Give yourself rewards

Treat yourself with something nice whenever you accomplish something. Think about a nice weekend getaway to the beach, for example. That would make you feel motivated to get good results for your next exam.

Above are some of the things that you need to remember in order to stay motivated. After all, motivation is not a thing that you can have easily. It is also not the thing that you would keep up easily as well.  Know about what will motivate you, create a realistic goal and schedule, join a study group and take a break frequently is a few things that can help you to stay motivated. And don’t forget to treat yourself something nice when you reach small milestones.
