In this blog we give you general information about the CSP scheme and how you can utilize it as an OUA student.
What are Commonwealth supported places (CSP)?
It is a Federal Government initiative to reduce the cost of tertiary studies on students so that students only pay ‘student contribution’ amounts for their units of study. Commonwealth supported places are available at all public universities and at some private higher education providers. The student contribution amount will vary depending on the type of course they are studying and how much the institution charges for the course.
Commonwealth supported places are only available to domestic students. Most undergraduate students studying at university are enrolled in Commonwealth supported places. A student is eligible for a Commonwealth supported place if they are:
- an Australian citizen;
- a New Zealand citizen; or
- the holder of a permanent visa.
Prior to 2012, only students who attend conventional universities with face-to-face teaching have access to CSP places. From 1 January 2012, the Government has extended the CSP scheme to OUA (Open Universities Australia) courses as well. Therefore, OUA Commonwealth supported place students may be eligible to receive more flexible HECS-HELP payment options. These include:
- Deferring payments on all course fees until an income threshold is reached.
- Making a partial upfront payment of $500 or more per Study Period and receiving a 10% discount on the portion paid. The remaining total can then be deferred until an income threshold is reached.
- Making a full upfront payment per Study Period and receiving a 10% discount.
However, not all OUA courses will have CSP places, please consult with OUA for a list of CSP courses offered through OUA from different universities.
