It is very important to be healthy as a student. There is no way you can complete your course at the university with flying colors without being in good health throughout the course. Although, as humans we cannot be completely insulated from sickness, there are a lot students can do to reduce the risk of getting sick. There are many ways students can stay fit without spending a lot of money. Here are a few tips to help you keep healthy as a student.

1. Eating healthy

This is the first and most important step in staying fit as a student. This may not require much money to achieve. There are two things involved in healthy eating.

i. Avoiding junk food

Most students think they don’t have time and one way of saving time is to live on junk food. But this may lead to ill health. A good number of students gain weight just after the first term through living on junk food. Cut down on the sugar drinks and the canned foods and you will be healthy.

ii. Eat the right food

Avoiding junk food alone is not good enough. You must eat a balanced diet. Eat enough carbohydrates for energy, eat enough protein like fish, lean meat and eggs to repair worn out tissues. And include fruits and vegetables in your diet for vitamins and minerals as well as dietary fiber.

iii. Drink water

About 70 percent of the human body is water. That is why we should all drink enough water every day in order to stay healthy.

2. Exercise

You may join a gym for this purpose if you can afford, but there are a lot you can do without spending money. You can make it a part of your daily schedules to have at least a 30 minutes’ walk. You can do this by walking to lectures instead of taking the bus. You can walk or jog around the campus on weekends and that may be fun.

3. Make use the sports facilities available

There are a lot of sports facilities such as basketball courts, tennis courts, swimming pools and football fields on the university campus. When you go to any of these places you may get the chance to play games with fellow students. Going for a swim at the beach if that is very close is another alternative.

4. Rest and Sleep

These are very important. During sleep, the brain rests and repairs worn out tissues. Depriving yourself of sleep will make your body weak and vulnerable to diseases. Make sure you sleep at least 6 hours a day. You don’t pay anything for sleeping.

5. See your doctor early when you feel sick

As said earlier, we cannot completely avoid sickness. But in order to stay fit, you must seek early treatment when you fall ill. Not doing so (for lack of time or money) may lead to complications which may require more money and much more time to treat.

It is therefore clear that staying fit as a student may not require much money at all. You only have to eat well, exercise, rest enough and seek early treatment in case you fall sick.

  • Don’t forget to buy a medical insurance because there are possibilities that you might need it one day.
Here are my buddies: fruits, fruits and fruits. I am so into tropical fruits like mango, guava, pineapple, grapesfruit and so on. They have the various amount of vitamin C as well as plenty of nutrition. Vegetables are good for your digestion, you might as well fall in love with it XD. Of course I know that some vegetables are not so good and easy-eated as people tell us, but you should eat it for the sake of health.
So if you want a vigorous life, repeat this cycle : fruits, vegetables, water and exercise.

  • I think all the tips only apply when your daily routine is fixed. Staying up late happens all time time because you have to study extra hours. I think seven-hour sleep a day is ok to everyone. We say we will avoid junk food but we even desire for more lol. Can you post something like how to be on a diet scientifically because I am so overweighted now ?

  • When I first came to Sydney and had no vehicles except my host mom bycicle, I rode it for 6 months. Guess what, my thighs were much bigger and stronger. Some of my friends they like to walk to school because it’s also a good way to exercise.
My advice is not much, alcohol is not a smart choice. You can drink a bit when you have parties.
Ahh I almost forgot, juice can help too. Juce still taste better than mineral water though.

  • all the previous comments all talk about what to eat and to do. For me the attitude decides all the status of your body. Positive thinking is a must, staying pessimistic brings no good and as a result, you might find yourself trying to avoid interacting from the society.
Good thoughts give you good ideas on how to do, what to eat and finally is how to live.
