  • Time frame: ongoing (minimum 12 months)
  • Time commitment - Average 1 - 2 hours per week
The program
Red Cross supports elderly members of the community to be more independent, to improve their wellbeing and social connection, and to remain living in their local community. We do this by matching volunteers with an older person who lives in aged care or at home and who is social isolated.
Having good social connections are essential for all aspects of health, especially as we age. Red Cross supports older people who live alone or who have few social connections, people with disability and people recovering from mental illness to help improve their wellbeing.
Red Cross social connection programs match those who are not in regular social contact with people with a caring and friendly volunteer. These programs include home visits, social outings, group activities, peer support and social phone calls.
The opportunity
This role suits someone over the age of 18 who is a good listener and can commit to one hour a fortnight for a social visit to an elderly person where you might chat together, reminisce, listen to music, read the newspaper or play card games.
The impact
As a Community Visitor, you'll brighten the life of a lonely and isolated older person by offering them company and friendship. Red Cross will ensure you have training, ongoing support and access to other opportunities within the World's largest humanitarian network.
