The program

Red Cross Community Development program is currently seeking two Volunteers to assist the Community Development Officer in delivering the 'At Risk Kalgoorlie-Boulder School Holiday Program'.

The school holiday program looks to provide children and youth, 8 - 17 year olds, a number of free activities such as sports days, fun days at Community and Youth Centre, visits to the swimming pool and movies to name just a few.

The opportunity

During the summer school holidays, the program will run Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 9am to 2pm, the winter program runs on the same days and times are 12pm to 5:30pm.

As a volunteer, you are expected to assist Red Cross with the following tasks.

Act in accordance with Red Cross policy and guidelines
Willing and able to engage with Youth (8-17)
Facilitate a wide range of physical and creative sport and recreation activities to promote healthy and positive behaviour and reduce disruptive behaviour within the community
Maintain cultural sensitivity as a main priority
Act as positive role models and be friendly, encouraging and supportive
Maintain a safe environment

The impact

Your kind assistance as a volunteer will have the following significant impacts on young people and associated local community.

Reducing youth boredom (which in turn can cause a reduction in crimes such as graffiti and shop lifting)
Allowing young people from lower socio-economic backgrounds to engage in activities that they otherwise wouldn't be able to afford
Providing food to participants that may not otherwise be adequately provided in the home environment
Showing young people healthy and positive ways to have fun and interact with peers and adults
Helping to ease the burden that school holidays can have on families, especially single parents and those families that suffer financial hardship
Allowing community members, through volunteering, to engage with local young people and act as positive role models
