Job no: 0040389
Work type: Continuing
Location: Parkville

School of Historical and Philosophical Studies

Faculty of Arts

Salary: $176,027 p.a. plus 17% superannuation

The Hansen Chair in History has been established to position the History
Program at Melbourne at the forefront of innovation and excellence in History
teaching. The Hansen Chair will be expected to make major contributions in the
areas of teaching, engagement, research, academic leadership, administration
and professional development at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels,
including RHD supervision. This position is part of a series of appointments
under The Hansen Trust. The Hansen Trust includes, in addition to the Level E
post, a continuing Level C (Senior Lecturer) post, three five-year fixed term
Level B (Lecturer) posts and an annual PhD scholarship. The fields of expertise
for each post and for the PhD scholarship are open, although it is the
intention of the School to ensure that at least two of the five teaching and
research posts will be allocated to specialists in historical periods prior to
1800.
The appointee will have an established research specialisation in an aspect of
History. The field of research and teaching in which the successful applicant
is an expert is open. The ability to extend current teaching areas and to
attract History students who are studying for degrees other than Arts (such as
Science, or Business and Economics) is desirable. The appointee will have an
outstanding research record, suitable for appointment as a University of
Melbourne professor and will have achieved a high level of international
research performance through refereed publications and the securing of research
grants.  A principal duty of the Hansen Chair in History will be to lead the
development of innovation and excellence in History teaching, and to engage,
nurture and extend interest in the discipline within the broader community. The
successful candidate will be expected to have qualifications and/or a strong
track record in leading the development of history curricula, in learning
innovation and in the development of teaching programs that increase student
numbers in undergraduate History programs.
This role sits within the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies in
the Faculty of Arts. The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies was
formed in 2011 and comprises the programs of History, History and Philosophy of
Science, Philosophy, Classics and Archaeology, the Grimwade Centre for Cultural
Materials Conservation and the Program in Jewish Culture and Society. The
School brings together a lively and engaging program of teaching and research
that offers a wide variety of courses and subjects.

The History Program has been at the forefront of the study of history in
Australia since 1854. In terms of the scale and standing of its staff and
research fellows, the size of its graduate research school, the number of
postdoctoral fellows, and number of competitive research grants awarded, the
History program at Melbourne is one of the largest and most significant in
Australia. It draws on the specialist knowledge and practical experience of
leading historians, both established and emerging, and its research engagement
is extensive. There are specialists in European, Asian, African, American and
Australian History as well as thematic histories with an inter-disciplinary and
international orientation such as human rights, social and cultural history,
postcolonial and indigenous history, heritage, urban and public history, memory
and oral history, transnational and diasporic histories. The School offers both
breadth and depth – covering through its subjects a diversity of times, places
and themes that reflect the latest developments in historical research and
vocational practice.
This full-time role is available on a continuing basis.
