Are you a freelance journalist who’s sick of writing about why the colour amaranth is the next big thing? Are you more interested in writing about why we need to change our lockout and lock up laws?

If you want an opportunity to fine-tune and showcase your journalistic skills while working for a dynamic, Sydney-based startup with a social conscience, look no further.

Who We Are

The QUO is an innovative, online publisher amplifying the voices of local change-makers and grassroots initiatives. Our focus is on well-researched journalism, We honour lived experiences and connect community members with geographically-proximate, socially-aware organisations and the issues they promote.

We cover the following topics:

   Refugee Rights

   Identity

   Environment

   Mental Health

   Grassroots Initiatives

   First Australians

   Power and Policy

   Art As Activism

We are looking for lead contributors who can work with us on a freelance basis.

Who You Are

You are socially engaged and curious. You like to push boundaries with your journalism while casually destroying patriarchy, heteronormativity and white supremacy in your spare time. You are not #blessed.

We want anyone who dares to care. Students, freelancers, stay-at-home parents or anyone with a journalistic background looking for a foot in door should apply.

The Role

   Researching and pitching your stories directly to our editorial staff.

   Contacting and communicating with potential leads including grassroots initiatives, not-for-profits, social enterprises and individuals.

   Interviewing interesting decision-makers, grassroots activists and social warriors about what drives them and the world we live in.

   Producing cutting-edge journalistic work that covers stories others aren’t talking about.

Your Skills

   Excellent written and verbal communication.

   Independent thinker.

   Self-motivated.

   Well organised.

   Will not crack under the pressure of deadlines.

What We Offer

   Monthly in-person meetings with our small editorial team and other lead contributors to facilitate team-building, brainstorming and collaboration. You can help shape our editorial direction.

   Optional weekly Skype meetings with one of our editorial staff.

   Publication of at least one written article per fortnight or publication schedule as agreed.

   A foot in the door of the highly competitive industry of journalism and publishing.

What We Need From You
