 Textbook on Criminology    (New)
$60.75 AUD
Textbook on Criminology offers an engaging and wide-ranging account of crime and criminology, addressing the theoretical, practical, and political aspects of the subject. The clarity of approach makes it an ideal text for students wishing to gain a firm grasp of the fundamental issues, together with an appreciation of some of the complexities surrounding the study of criminology.

The author deals with the major questions of criminology, such as 'how do you define a crime?', 'why do people become criminals?', and 'how should we deal with criminals?'. Each question is studied from an objective and academic viewpoint and encourages greater social, political, and philosophical awareness of crime, criminals, and society's response to them. The text also maps out the changes in crime control and society's expectations in relation to crime control. For example, students will find the insightful chapter on terrorism and state violence to be of particular interest and relevance; established criminological theories are applied, and the author addresses issues such as political responses to terrorism and the reasons why people become terrorists.

The text is ideal both for students studying towards a degree in criminology, and students opting to study criminology as part of another subject, such as law.

 The De-Textbook    (New)
$22.25 AUD
You are an idiot.

Don't get defensive! It's not your fault. For decades your teachers, authority figures and textbooks have been lying to you. You do not have five senses. Your tongue doesn't have neatly segregated taste-bud zones. You don't know what the pyramids really looked like. You're even pooping wrong - Jesus, you're a wreck!

But it's going to be okay. Because we're here to help. Packed with more sexy facts than the Encyclopedia Pornographica, the Cracked De-Textbook will teach you about the true stars of history, why you picture everything from Velociraptors to Ancient Rome incorrectly, and finally, at long last - how to pop a proper squat. This book was built from the ground up to systematically seek out, dismantle and destroy the many untruths that years of misguided education have left festering inside of you, and leave you a smarter person...whether you like it or not. The De-Textbook is a merciless, brutal learning machine. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are informed.
 Textbook Reds    (New)
$49.5 AUD

If one wants to know what children in communist East Europe were told to think about their nation and their leaders, their class enemy, and their so-called Soviet friends, no better source exists than textbooks. In textbooks the dogmas of communism were communicated in their most simplified form and manufactured in the millions for mass consumption. In Textbook Reds, John Rodden shows how the now-defunct German Democratic Republic (GDR) shaped generations of East German youth and how the imprint of Marxist-Leninist ideology remains today on the hearts and minds of millions of eastern Germans, more than fifteen years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Drawing on a rich and varied collection of materials—a total of more than two hundred textbooks, teaching guides, school songbooks, educators’ professional journals, and school examinations—Rodden spotlights the “textbook mentality” that permeated East German society. In the GDR’s campaign to win the minds of men, any critiques of the Party were equated with disloyalty and the bourgeois sins of individualism, negativism, and cosmopolitanism. Citizens who broke free of such indoctrination still bore marks of its influence, even long after leaving school—and long after the GDR’s dissolution in 1990.

The second part of the book offers a glimpse of post-communism today. Through interviews with dozens of teachers and students from contemporary eastern Germany, we see that East German faculty and students constitute perhaps the largest, most articulate, most traumatized segment of the population affected by events since 1989. Not just a study in comparative education, Textbook Reds is also a work in the sociology of education, literary sociology, and literary history. Rodden shows that the deepest roots of GDR society were indeed located in the institution that molded the youth of its citizens, and that the most searching questions about East German identity and the repression of its political past are in fact to be found there.

 The Crystal Textbook    (New)
$40.25 AUD
The Crystal Textbook is laid out in two parts. Part I, "Working with Light and Crystals," establishes a foundation of how light works, along with asserting the need for discernment in understanding how crystals work. Part II, "Crystals" discusses individual crystals. It is set up alphabetically, thus providing the reader with an easy way to go directly to the discussion of a particular crystal. Ideally, the reader reads section one outright, then delves into crystals of interest at his leisure. Because divine light does all the work, some confusion naturally arises around which crystals contribute to which tasks. The sections on healing and negativity work toward an understanding of the qualities of light that could lead to the misconception that all crystals are healers, and that all crystals work with negativity. True enough perhaps, but crystals are specialized. A section entitled, "Crystal Specialization" is included to clarify the specific roles that crystals play by addressing the concept of specialization. Light is central to any understanding of how crystals work, so there is a section in Part I entitled, "Basic Characteristics of Light." Densification, fragmentation, and splitting are a few of the difficulties that happen to light frequencies as they take on physical density. Light has a number of basic characteristics that need to be explained before making sense of the way particular crystals work. The Crystal Textbook carries sufficient explanations of the relevant characteristics of light at the appropriate places to ensure that it stands alone. As part of "Working with Light and Crystals," there is a section on the 'Eleven-Chakra' system. Having this background information will help in synthesizing the knowledge of the Light Body layout and the roles played by Hematite, Kyanite, Calcite, and Selenite. Also included are sections on the rules of thumb for crystal colours, the nature of creativity, and the shortfall that plagues the quality of crystals. Not all aspects of crystals are so straight-forward that background information can be omitted. While most discussions of a given crystal are complete unto themselves, "Working with Light and Crystals" was placed at the front of the book because of its importance in fleshing out the reader's inventory of background knowledge. This section could have been included as an appendix, but would then have been after-the-fact. The section on cleansing, clearing, and empowering crystals is also placed in Part I to similarly elevate its importance and prevent its being missed. Unless the reader has attended my "Crystals' Light Workshop," references to the role of ions in water is likely to offer a new understanding of how crystals are cleansed. Ions are not the only topic in this section. The carpenter, politician, rocket scientist, truck driver, and biologist are highly specialized occupations. Each discipline bears its own very unique set of skills. One of the primary themes running throughout The Crystal Textbook is that crystals are also highly specialized. Each crystalline vibration is unique, and therefore, each crystal works in its own very specialized way. Each of the carpenter, politician, rocket scientist, truck driver, and biologist can very easily create new life to become a father or mother. They have a number of other common possibilities as well. Crystals, too, have common possibilities in the sense that the same light frequency can be attracted by a number of different crystals. Attributing the quality or action of the common frequency to one of the crystals, but not the others, provides only a partial truth. There is some crossover of qualities and actions because the light frequencies involved can crossover between different crystals. The complete story revolves around what else the crystals do. The complete story points to the specialization and uniqueness inherent to every different crystal.

The 'New Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry' two volume set is one of the leading reference works in this field. Bringing together over 200 chapters from the leading figures in the discipline, it presents a comprehensive account of clinical psychiatry, with reference to its scientific basis and to the patient's perspective throughout. In the 8 years since publication of the first edition, many new and exciting developments have occurred in the biological sciences, which are having a major impact on how we study and practise psychiatry. In addition, psychiatry has fostered closer ties with philosophy, and these are leading to healthy discussions about how we should diagnose and treat mental illness. This new edition recognises these and other developments.

Throughout, accounts of clinical practice are linked to the underlying science, and to the evidence for the efficacy of treatments. Physical and psychological treatments, including psychodynamic approaches, are covered in depth. The history of psychiatry, ethics, public health aspects, and public attitudes to psychiatry and to patients are all given due attention. The 'New Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry' will continue to serve the profession as an authoritative and comprehensive reference.

The chapters focus on the important conditions within the different systems as well as other additional information that is pertinent in the field, e.g. child protection and genetics. R D (UK)

'Perfect as an introductory book to a subject that is often unlike any other in medicine. Well laid out and easy to read.'

K C Henderson (UK)

'This is really a great textbook for paediatrics. The most powerful features are, of course, the perfect images, summary boxes and diagrams. This book is both concise and comprehensive at the same time.'

D K Charalampopoylos (Greece)

'This is a book that was highly recommended by colleagues working in Australia and the UK. I am preparing to sit for the Australian Medical Council Exams in May 2010 and I needed something with pictures and easy to read. It's got many pictures and I read it from cover to cover in 3 weeks! It's a great book that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to any doctor out there.'

At Okullo (Belgium)

'This is the recommended text for paediatrics at my school, and for good reason. The text, whilst sometimes being lengthy, is well laid out, gives good explanations and goes into sufficient depth for final year undergraduate medicine and for junior doctors in this specialty. There are plenty of diagrams and break out boxes summarising key take home messages.'

M Roach (UK)
